Is ground decaf coffee bad for you?

Unfortunately, the study of coffee and its effect on us hasn’t been research all that much. There is very little conclusive evidence to link drinking coffee (decaf included) and increased or decreased health risks.

However, we can analyse and quantify what we do know that is in coffee and how those elements affect the body.

How decaf coffee is made

The decaffeination process begins with unroasted green beans which are typically soaked in water to dissolve some caffeine. After this step, there are four primary methods for removing the caffeine from the beans.

Our choice: the swiss water process

The process begins by soaking beans in hot water to dissolve the caffeine. This water is then extracted from the same contain as the beans and is then processed through an activated charcoal filter.

This filter has holes large enough to capture caffeine molecules while allowing smaller oils and flavours to pass through it. After this process we have two tanks; one with caffeine free flavoured water “green coffee extract†and the other with flavourless caffeine-free coffee beans.

The beans are discarded and the delicious coffee flavoured water, that’s caffeine-free remember, is used to remove caffeine from a fresh batch of coffee beans. This process allows for caffeine to be extracted while the flavour rich water enters the new beans.

Antioxidants and nutrients

It’s regarded that coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet. However, when compared to standard coffee, decaf typically has 15% drop in antioxidants. The main antioxidants in coffee are hydrocinnamic acids and polyphenols.

These two antioxidants help reduce ageing, blood clots, blood sugar levels and heart disease risk while also improving brain function, digestion and protection against some cancers.

1 cup of coffee also contains a small amount of your recommended daily intake for the following nutrients: 2% magnesium, 4% potassium and 2% vitamin B3 — so drinking a few cups a day can quickly add up.
